Dr. Robert Elliott Watercolors
Inspired by Leonardo DaVinci's Drawings

Walter Pater wrote:

“ He seemed to those about him as one listening to a voice, silent for other men.”

Through the giving of colours to and my own interpretation of  Leonardo’s drawings,  it is my wish to make the Master’s voice audible for you; and to express my own creativity through His – producing a work of art that appeals to contemporary tastes –  taking on a ‘new life’ within the setting of  contemporary 21st Century homes.

“He is smitten with a love of the impossible.”

Within Leonardo’s oveure,  brainstorm ideas reside in surviving tiny notebook drawings (often only a few inches in height and only suggestively sketched) – each  with its own spark of  individual genius.  These are often passed over because in their less impressive size drawn with pen and ink or red chalk medium,  they appear faint or unfinished; most  a spark of concept -  never having reached the light of day in painted form from the Master’s own brush.

Only a dozen autograph Leonardo paintings have come down to us.  The precious few others having perished from the ravages of war and time.

I have endeavoured to bring his drawings back to the light of attention they deserve, using a more impressionistic expression in watercolour paint; adding my own coloristic interpretations.  Observers’ most frequent comment is t my interpretations convey “a wave of impression.”

I wish to present you with my impression of how these drawings might have appeared; given all that I am able to discern from the art historical critical sources,  using my own intuitive skills and watercolour brushes.  I hope that a touch of the Master’s intent has flowed into each!
