Watercolor Interpretation of Leonardo's
Neptune and the Sea Horses
  (ca 1503)  Charcoal or soft black chalk  (9 5/16 x 15 5/16 in)

Neptune and the Sea Horses Drawing
Nepture and the Sea Horses
Leonardo’s larger scale presentation drawing for Antonio Segni, a Boticelli patron, does not survive, but was said by Vasari (1550) to be “executed with such draftsmanship and diligence that it seemed absolutely alive.”  This small-scale drawing is all that remains.

Along with his Leda and the Swan, Neptune is Leonardo’s most grand recreation of the classical imagery (Virgil’s Aneid; Ovid’s Metamorphosis).  He scribbled, “put forth all your strength …and give full rein to all your river steeds.”  Possibly the model was derived from a Medici Greek or Roman vase, which Leonardo appraised for Isabella de Este.

Leonardo’s Neptune inspired the younger Raphael, who adopted many of the Master’s poses and techniques.  Leonardo wrote above this Neptune preliminary drawing to the left, “bring down the horses.”

Walter Pater wrote:

“…One becomes aware of the subtler forces of nature, and the modes of their action, all that is magnetic in it, all those finer conditions where in material things rise to the subtlety of operation which constitutes them spiritual….”
